Stick and Go • Week 7 Primer By Mike Langston |
Through 6 games of the season, I have spent a lot of time writing about the offensive issues that have been present this season and we've spent a lot of time on the podcast discussing it. So, I wanted to take a departure from that side of the field this week and talk about the defense and what they accomplished last weekend and have shown throughout the season. If you want to hear about the offense right now, check out our newest episode where it is discussed at length. Today's main focus is Coach Seiler's unit.
And there's no better week for it. The defense is coming off one of the best performances in program history, a Monarch legend is getting his jersey retired, and the lights are coming on at S.B. Ballard Stadium for a Thursday night game on ESPN2. If ODU can repeat the magic of Thursday night football of the last two years, Monarch Nation is in for a treat.

Thursday Nights Belong to Ballard
This is the third straight year ODU has hosted a Thursday night game, and the first two weren't close.
In 2024, Georgia Southern came to Norfolk for the first Thursday home game in ODU history and left on the wrong end of a 47-19 final. Last year, Troy made the trip and didn't score at all. ODU won 33-0, the program's first shutout since 2017, and the defense allowed just 138 yards, the fewest in program history.
Two Thursday nights at home, an 80-19 combined score, and a defense that has played a major factor both times. Now it's Georgia Southern who again draws the short-week assignment in Norfolk.

Boone Can Be The Blueprint
Last year's 138-yard night against Troy was special. And last Saturday, this defense came about as close to it as you can get. In the pouring rain in Boone, ODU held App State to 158 total yards, the second-fewest the program has ever allowed. The only better performance came under the Thursday night lights at Ballard.

The Mountaineers managed 60 yards in the first half and went 1-for-13 on third down, with the lone conversion coming on their final drive. The defense forced seven punts and three turnovers and kept App State out of the end zone entirely, the first time that had happened to the Mountaineers since 2013. When App State had one last shot, Brandon Crutchfield picked off a fourth-down throw to send the Monarchs home with their first win in Boone.
It was the type of complementary football this team needs to play. The offense ran a school-record 61 times and held the ball for nearly 39 minutes, so App State only got 55 snaps. The weather played a role, but the defense played their tails off and made things extremely difficult for the Mountaineers. Coach Rahne may have gotten the headlines for keeping his halftime promise by sliding headfirst down a mud-soaked Miller Hill, but it was the defense that made the slide possible.
That level of play wasn't a surprise for this defense. We knew this was a talented unit with how many starters returned from a fantastic 2025 defense. And they have shown what they are capable of in 2026.
ODU is giving up 324.1 yards per game, third in the Sun Belt, and has held three of six opponents under 300 yards. The 27.5 points per game on the scoreboard don't tell the full story: 49 of the 165 points ODU has allowed, nearly 30 percent, came on return touchdowns or after giveaways deep in ODU territory.
Defensive end Javen "Gus" Gibson, in his second year at ODU after transferring from Mississippi Gulf Coast, is tied for the Sun Belt lead and 10th nationally with 8.5 tackles for loss, and he was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week after the triumph over the ‘Eers.
The linebacker room, usually one of the most dependable groups on the roster, had some preseason questions after injuries in 2025 to two of its stars. However, Mario Thompson and Koa Naotala have returned to form and have had a major impact, Jackson Forrest continues putting pressure on the opposition with 5.5 TFL.
On the back end, Lucas Struck leads the team with 41 tackles and Brandon Crutchfield has two interceptions. As a unit, ODU has 15 sacks, tied for second in the league, and seven fumble recoveries, second only to UCLA nationally.

A Night for No. 14
Thursday is about more than the Eagles. At the end of the first quarter, ODU will retire Taylor Heinicke's No. 14 jersey, making him the first football player in program history to receive that honor. It comes just weeks after his induction into the ODU Athletics Hall of Fame, and all Monarchs know exactly what it means.
Heinicke earned First Team All-America honors and captured the 2012 Walter Payton Award as the top player in FCS, but Monarch fans didn't need a trophy to tell them what they already knew. He was special from the very beginning. The rest of the nation finally caught on when he put up an astonishing 730 passing yards against New Hampshire on a sweltering day at Foreman Field, shattering the single-game passing record. He spearheaded ODU’s transition to the FBS, shattered 33 school records, and left college football as one of Division I’s all-time greats; ranking in the top 10 with 14,959 passing yards and 132 touchdowns. He was a true phenomenon, and watching him command the offense was a privilege.
When the first quarter ends, give the GOAT the ovation he has earned, and stay loud for the current squad of Monarchs trying to write their own chapter.

This Week's Matchup: Georgia Southern
On the surface, this matchup looks like a coin flip. Both teams enter at 2-4, oddsmakers have the spread at just 3.5-points, and each side plays to a completely different strength. But don't let the record fool you: Georgia Southern is better than advertised. They've played a tough schedule, hanging with Clemson and Houston and dropping one-score games to Jacksonville State and unbeaten JMU, powered by a talented quarterback who makes the offense go.
Everything starts with quarterback Max Johnson. He ranks fifth in the country at nearly 25 completions per game, he's the first quarterback in Georgia Southern history to throw three touchdown passes in three straight games, and he just threw for 343 yards against JMU. Josh Dallas is his top target, coming off an 8-catch, 111-yard night.
On the other side, the Eagles' defense has 15 sacks, the same as ODU, and opened the year by allowing 8 rushing yards to FCS Charleston Southern, the fewest in program history. Georgia Southern has also had 14 first-time starters this year, tied with ODU for fourth-most in the country. Two green rosters, one national TV spotlight.
Statistically, Georgia Southern holds the upper hand with a higher-performing offense and a defense capable of generating consistent pressure on opposing passers. Yet recent history between these two squads favors Old Dominion: the Monarchs have won three consecutive meetings (two by 28+ points), and head coach Ricky Rahne owns a 3-1 career mark against the Eagles.
Thursday is a massive test. JMU and Georgia State showed that the way to move the ball on this defense is through the air, which plays right into Johnson's strengths. Contain him, and this defense can transform the trajectory of Old Dominion's season and make the rest of the teams on the schedule take notice.

So How Does ODU Win This One?
|
1
|
Make Max Johnson uncomfortable. A quarterback who completes 25 passes a game wants rhythm. Gibson, Forrest and a pass rush tied for second in the league need to keep him off his spot and create chaos in the passing game. |
|
2
|
Keep the takeaways coming. All those completions mean a lot of catches in traffic. This defense punches at the ball and finds fumbles better than almost anyone in the country, and one or two short fields could decide the game. |
|
3
|
Run the Boone formula again. Long drives, a heavy dose of ground and pound, and a big time-of-possession edge. The fewer snaps Johnson gets, the better. |
|
4
|
Feed off the building. Thursday nights at Ballard have been electric, and a fast start with the crowd still buzzing from the Heinicke ceremony could give the squad the edge needed to separate from a solid Georgia Southern team. |

The Bottom Line
Georgia Southern is a 3.5-point favorite, with the total at 47.5. Read between the lines and the books expect a close, lower-scoring game, which is exactly the kind of game this defense has shown it can win.
The last two Thursday nights at The Castle ended in blowouts. Last week, the defense put up its best performance since that Troy shutout. Add a legend's jersey going up and a national TV audience, and the stage is set. Let's pack Ballard, honor No. 14, and make it three straight Thursday nights to remember.
