Season 3, Episode 1 — the full staff breaks down a loaded incoming class, new NCAA rules, and the road to a Sun Belt tournament bid

Season three of In the Lion's Den is here, and Aaron and Mike went all in for the opener and brought the whole ODU Men's Soccer staff onto the show. Head Coach Tennant McVea is joined by assistant coaches Josh Spencer and Nathan Jones for a full 2026 season preview: what's changed around the building, a deep dive on the new class, the vision for this year's team, and a first look at the schedule.

A Busy Offseason Around the Building

The spring was eventful. ODU hosted the first-ever Commonwealth Cup, Nathan Jones' brainchild, designed to give in-state spring matches actual stakes and the Monarchs came away as the inaugural champions. The program also welcomed a new women's soccer staff led by Will, added a dedicated recovery space for athletes on both sides of the building, and brought on former player Paul Sarac as a performance coach and data analyst while he completes his PhD in human performance. Director of Operations Matthew Dennis also joined full-time, taking administrative weight off Nathan's plate.

And yes ... Josh Spencer's summer got a little sidetracked by the World Cup, where the England native caught four matches, including the opener in Dallas.

Meet the 2026 Class: Size, Character, and a Global Pipeline

Coach McVea and his staff brought in another large class built around connections they trust — former teammates, coaches, and programs they've recruited from before. A few names to know:

  • Diego Camargo: a 6'5" NAIA transfer goalkeeper from Bethel University (Tenn.), brought in to replace departed program stalwart Michael Statham
  • Mile Zivkovic: a 6'2"-plus striker out of the Cedar Stars/World Class pipeline and the first commitment of the class; the staff moved early and never looked back
  • David Chapman, Huw Dawson & Matthew Moffatt: three grad transfers from the University of Nottingham (England) who won a national university championship together
  • Noah Dietze: a 6'4" German center back the staff tracked closely after a former Monarch recommended him personally
  • Jason "Purksey" Purks: a transfer portal winger Josh Spencer coached in summer league years ago and calls one of the best people in the program
  • Logan Bugni: a Fredericksburg, Va. product out of the Virginia Development Academy, whom the staff compares to program favorite Owen Roddy for his relentless attitude

The rest of the class rounds out with Jacopo Caprile, Ludovico Vicini, George Maire, Fraser Page, Jaykob Marquez, Tziyon Morris and Max Graf — a group the staff believes checks the boxes on size, athleticism, and character they've prioritized in Norfolk.

"There's no doubt college soccer is an extremely physical game... I will say we are big."

The Vision for 2026

Coach McVea isn't promising a conference title, but he is promising a program that competes for one of the toughest leagues in the country's NCAA Tournament bids. After a season defined by close, knife's-edge results, the staff's focus is consistency — closing out the tight games ODU didn't finish last year.

"If we're consistently winning during the year, we're gonna put ourselves in that national picture... we get a chance to dance."

New Rules to Watch This Season

College soccer is borrowing a page from the pros in 2026. Coaches now get two in-game video review challenges for major calls (goals, fouls on goals, and offside in goal-scoring chances), and a new eight-second goalkeeper rule aims to speed up time-wasting on distribution, staff earned yellow cards flow up to the head coach, and much more.

Schedule Highlights

Fans get their first look at the Monarchs in a free preseason exhibition against American University on Friday, August 14 at 4:00 PM. The regular season opens on the road at GW before ODU settles in for a heavy home slate, six of the first seven games in Norfolk. Circle these on the calendar:

  • Home opener vs. Elon: a national-tournament team from a year ago, and an early measuring stick
  • West Virginia at home, October 9: Josh Spencer's pick, and a matchup with history for the staff
  • The Royal Rivalry vs. JMU at home: Halloween week, senior night, and homecoming weekend all in one

Why Norfolk Sells Itself

Beyond the roster, the staff pointed to what continues to separate ODU on the recruiting trail: a new athletic dining hall the coaches call second to none, a recovery space steps from the practice and game fields, and a campus that's closer to the beach than Coastal Carolina is to Myrtle Beach, a lifestyle selling point that keeps showing up in players' social feeds all summer long.
